Sweetness and Light – Tunisian Crochet Heart Applique

These fun little hearts are small enough they can be worked with a regular crochet hook. A Tunisian crochet hook is not required. Use them as patches on clothing or as appliques on tote bags, hats, baby blankets, scarves, and more. Try making several and attaching them to a ribbon or yarn chain to make a festive garland or wall hanging.

Size. 4” x 3.5” (10.2 cm x 8.9 cm)

Skill Level: Experienced. This is not a project for beginners. This little project will challenge your skill and concentration. Every step is clearly demonstrated, so adventurous crocheters can attempt this fun little heart.

I have provided two videos on my YouTube channel to enable you to be successful with this project.

Part 1, https://youtu.be/aJSFxE2fCwM, demonstrates how to make a mitered square in modified Tunisian simple stitch. Two lobes, made with short rows, are then added to create the heart shape. Clear instructions are included on how to make a special seam, similar to a mattress stitch seam, on each lobe.

Part 2, https://youtu.be/W4o07cz8qaU, shows how to add surface crochet stitches and scalloped edging.

Skill Level. Experienced. A procedure diagram and ample photos are included.

Stitches and Techniques. Modified Tunisian simple stitch, short rows, needle join, mattress stitch, slip stitch, chain, half-double crochet, and surface stitches.

Tools. H-8/5.0 mm regular crochet hook (Tunisian hook not required), scissors, tapestry needle, and 5 stitch markers.

Yarn. Approximately 0.3 oz / 15 yds (8.5 g / 14 m) medium weight (#4) yarn for each heart. In photos: Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton, in Turquoise, Sunshiny, Rosey II, and White.
