Crochet Pattern in US Terminology by Cheryl Dee Floyd

There are so many possibilities with this pretty floral square. Use it with other squares for throws, blankets, or afghans, or as a pocket on a scarf or bag.

Skill Level. Intermediate.

Techniques used in this pattern. Chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, standing stitches, joined rounds, joining in the corner, needle join (aka invisible join).

Finished Measurements. 6” square (15.2 cm), flower 5.25” (13.3 cm) diameter.

Gauge. Flower diameter is 3.5” (8.9 cm) after completing Round 8 (petals).

Tools. G/6 (4.25 mm) hook, stitch marker, yarn needle, and scissors.

Yarn. For the square, approximately 1.1 oz / 57 yds (32 g / 52 m) medium weight (#4) yarn. Less yarn for just the flower applique. In photos: Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton in Rosey II (A), White (B), Pink (C), and Sage (D).

Abbreviations. Ch – chain; dc – double crochet (UK – treble crochet); hdc – half double crochet (UK – half treble crochet); NJ – needle join; sc – single crochet (UK – double crochet); rep – repeat; RS – right side; sc – single crochet (UK – double crochet); sl st – slip stitch; sp(s) – space(s); st(s) – stitch(es); WS – wrong side; yo – yarn over (UK – yarn over hook).

INSTRUCTIONS

Rnd 1. Flower Center. With A, ch 4, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring, ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in ring, ch 1, (2 hdc in ring, ch 1) 5 times; NJ in first hdc, not in beginning ch-2. 12 hdc, 6 ch-sps.

~~Needle join (NJ) (a.k.a. Invisible Join): Cut working yarn to 7” (18 cm) length. Pull tail out through last st on hook. Insert tail into yarn needle, insert needle front to back into st indicated, pull through, insert needle front to back under back loop of last st made, pull through, keeping tension same as surrounding sts. Weave in ends.

Rnd 2. Spaces for Petals 2. With slip knot on hook, attach B with standing sc in 2nd hdc of any set of 2 hdc, ch 4, (skip ch-sp and hdc, sc in next hdc, ch 4) 5 times; join with sl st in standing sc. 6 sc, 6 ch-4 sps.

~~Standing sc. With slip knot on hook, insert hook in place indicated, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through both loops.

Rnd 3. Spaces for Petals 3. Ch 4 (counts as sc, ch 3), (sc in ch-4 sp, ch 3, sc in sc, ch 3) 4 times, sc in last ch-4 sp, ch 3; join with sl st in first ch. 12 sc, 12 ch-3 sps.

Rnd 4. Spaces for Leaves. Ch 5 (counts as sc, ch 4), (sc in sc, ch 4) 11 times; join with sl st in first ch. 12 sc, 12 ch-4 sps.

Rnd 5 note. This round provides chain spaces for the background square. Omit this round and skip to Rnd 6, if you are making just an applique. The full written pattern in my Etsy shop continues with the background square after Rnd 9.

Rnd 5 instructions. Ch 5 (counts as sc, ch 4), (sc in next sc, ch 4) 11 times; join with sl st in first ch. Remove hook and place stitch marker in loop. 12 sc, 12 ch-4 sps.

~~Note. For rounds 6 through 9, take care to work into the correct rounds of the grid.

Rnd 6. Petals 1. With slip knot on hook, attach C with sl st in any ch-1 sp of Rnd 1, *(ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, sl st) in same sp, ch 1, skip 2 hdc, sl st in next ch-1 sp of Rnd 1; rep from * 5 more times, working last sl st as join to first sl st. 6 petals.

Rnd 7. Petals 2. *(Sl st, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-4 sp from Rnd 2, (2 dc, ch 3, sl st) in same ch-4 sp, but on other side of sc of Rnd 3, skip next sc; rep from * 5 more times; working last sl st as join to first sl st. 6 petals

Rnd 8. Petals 3. *(Sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, sl st) in next ch-sp from Rnd 3, skip sc; rep from * 11 more times; join with sl st in first ch. Fasten off. Weave in ends. 12 petals.

Rnd 9. Leaves. With slip knot of D on hook, sl st in next ch-4 sp of Rnd 4, ch 2, (dc, 3 tr) in same ch-4 sp, pointy picot, skip sc, *(3 tr, dc, ch 2, sl st) in next ch-sp of Rnd 4, skip sc**, (sl st, ch 2, dc, 3 tr) in next ch-4 sp, pointy picot, skip sc; rep from * 5 more times, ending last rep at **; join with sl st in first sl st. Fasten off. Weave in ends. 6 leaves.

~~Pointy Picot. Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up loop (2 loops on hook, insert hook under two front strands of previous st, yo, pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 3 loops.
