Crochet Pattern in US Terminology by Cheryl Dee Floyd

This pretty flower, framed in a neutral background square, is a great project for yarn scraps. Stitch multiple squares together to make blankets, bags, scarves, cowls, and shawls. Instructions below are just for the flower. Use it as an applique for hats, scarves, curtains, gloves, tops, skirts, bags, wall décor, and pillows. The instructions below are for just the flower applique.

Size of Square. 6” x 6” (15 cm x 15 cm)

Size of Flower with Leaves. 5.25” (13.3 cm) diameter

Skill level. Intermediate.

Techniques used in this pattern. Chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, half double crochet, treble crochet, front post single crochet, standing stitches, needle join (aka invisible join).

Yarn. Approximately 1.1 oz / 57 yds (32 g / 52 m) medium weight (#4) yarn, less yarn for just the applique. In photo above: Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton in Turquoise (A), White (B), Pink (C), Rosey II (D), and Sage (E).

Gauge. Flower diameter is 4.25” (10.8 cm) after completing Round 7 (petals).

Abbreviations. ch(s) – chain(s); dc – double crochet (UK – treble crochet); FPsc – front post single crochet (UK – raised double crochet); hdc – half double crochet (UK – half treble crochet); NJ – needle join; rep – repeat; Rnd – round; RS – right side; sc – single crochet (UK – double crochet); sl st – slip stitch; sp(s) – space(s); st(s) – stitch(es); tr – treble crochet (UK – double treble crochet); WS – wrong side; yo – yarn over (UK – yarn over hook).

INSTRUCTIONS

Rnd 1. Flower Center. With A, ch 4, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring, ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in ring, ch 1, (2 hdc in ring, ch 1) 5 times; NJ in first hdc, not in beginning ch-2. 12 hdc, 6 ch-sps.

~~Needle join (NJ) (a.k.a. Invisible Join): Cut working yarn to 7” (18 cm) length. Pull tail out through last st on hk. Insert tail into yarn needle, insert needle front to back into st indicated, pull through, insert needle front to back under back loop of last st made, pull through, keeping tension same as surrounding sts. Weave in ends.

Rnd 2. Petals 1. Attach B with sl st in next ch-1 sp, *(ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, sl st) in same sp, ch 1, skip 2 hdc, sl st in next ch-1 sp; rep from * 5 more times, working last sl st as join to first sl st. Fasten off. Weave in ends. 6 petals.

Rnd 3. Chains for Petals 2. Working over ch-1 from Rnd 2, attach C with standing sc in 2nd hdc of next 2 hdc in Rnd 1, ch 4, *skip next petal, sc in 2nd hdc of next set of 2 hdc from Rnd 1, ch 4; rep from * 4 more times; join with sl st in standing sc. Pull petals in front of ch-sps. 6 sc, 6 ch-4 sps.

~~Standing sc. With slip knot on hook, insert hook in place indicated, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through both loops.

Rnd 4. Petals 2. Ch 1, *(sl st, ch 3, 4 dc, ch 3, sl st) in next ch-4 sp, skip next sc; rep from * 5 more times, join with sl st in first ch-1. Fasten off. Weave in ends. 6 petals.

Rnd 5. Chains for Petals 3. WS. On back of flower, attach D with standing *sc in next ch-sp of Rnd 3 between 2nd and 3rd dc sts of Rnd 4 petal, ch 3, sc in sl st between petals, ch 3; rep from * 5 more times; join with sl st in standing sc. 12 sc, 12 ch-3 sps.

Rnd 6. Petals 3. RS. Ch 1 and turn, *(sl st, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, sl st) in next ch-3 sp, skip sc; rep from * 11 more times, join with sl st in first sl st. Fasten off. Weave in ends. 12 petals.

Rnd 7. Chains for Leaves. WS. Attach E with standing *FPsc around next sc of Rnd 5, ch 4; rep from * 11 more times, join with sl st in standing FPsc. 12 FPsc, 12 ch-4 sps.

~~Standing FPsc. With slip knot on hook, work FPsc in place indicated, as first st of round.

~~FPsc. Insert hook front-to-back-to-front around post of st indicated, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through both loops.

~~Tip. Work FPsc slowly and carefully to avoid snagging strands of surrounding sts.

Rnd 8. Leaves. RS. Ch 1 and turn. Working on right side, fold petals forward to work into Rnd 7 ch-sps, (sl st, ch 2, dc, 3 tr) in same ch-4 sp, pointy picot, skip sc, *(3 tr, dc, ch 2, sl st) in next ch-sp, skip sc**, (sl st, ch 2, dc, 3 tr) in next ch-4 sp, pointy picot, skip sc; rep from * 5 more times, ending last rep at **; join with sl st in first sl st.

~~Pointy Picot. Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hk, yo, pull up loop (2 loops on hook, insert hook under two front strands of previous st, yo, pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through all 3 loops. Fasten off. Weave in ends. 6 leaves.

~~Note. Each half of the leaf is worked into a different ch-sp.
