UPDATE 4/19/2020: I have taken this pattern offline temporarily for further development. Thanks for your patience!
Linked double-crochet stitches yield a dense fabric, good for keeping out the cold winds of winter. This hat is worked from the top down, in a spiral, and uses front-post-double-crochet stitches for the band. You’ll need two different hook sizes for this pattern. You’ll be holding two strands of worsted-weight yarn together to make a thicker yarn. The two yarn colorways shown in the photos are each variegated, yielding a delightful marbled effect throughout.
Skill Level: Intermediate. Stitches and techniques used include slip stitch, linked double-crochet, front-post double-crochet, and working in a spiral. Holding two strands of yarn together takes a bit of practice. So, if that doesn’t suit your taste, feel free to use a single strand of worsted weight yarn. Just make a swatch to ensure your gauge/tension matches the pattern.
Tools: L/11-8.0 mm and I/9-5.5 mm hooks, scissors, yarn needle, and stitch marker.
Yarn: 3.1 oz (89 g / 240 yds / 218 m) Red Heart Unforgettable 100% acrylic yarn in two colors (Tidal and Bistro are shown in photos), using two strands held together.
Yarn substitutions: For a 97% match use Katia Polaris, Loops and Threads Colors, or Scheepjes Wanderlust. You may also substitute Lionbrand Landscapes yarn, but work with a single strand and a N-9 mm hook for the hat body and a L/11-8.00 mm for the band. Always do a swatch to make sure your tension/gauge matches the pattern.
Gauge: Hat body with L hk – 11 sts and 6.5 rows in 4”. Band with I hk – 6 sts and 4 rows in 2”.
Size: Circumference 22” to 23”. Finished hat depth is 8”.
