A lacy crocheted square for shawls, throws, pillow overlays, curtains, or afghans. This pattern is called “Five Diamonds” because, no matter which way it is turned, there are five diamonds (or squares), one within another, in the center of the square.

Materials. Approximately 1.2 oz /63 yds (34 g /57 m) medium weight (#4) for each square. In photos: Red Heart Super Saver in Soft White.
Tools. K/10.5 (6.5 mm) hook, yarn needle, scissors, and stitch marker (optional).
Gauge. Finished square measures approximately 10” x 10” (25 cm x 25 cm).
Abbreviations. Ch – chain; dc – double crochet (UK – treble crochet); hdc – half double crochet (UK – half treble); prev – previous; rnd – round; sk – skip (UK – miss); sl st – slip stitch; sc – single crochet (UK – double crochet); sp – space; sq – square; st(s) – stitch(es); tr – treble crochet (UK – double treble).
Instructions
Rnd 1. Ch 4, sl st to first ch to form ring, ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), (dc in ring, ch 1) 7 time, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-4. 16 sts total.
Rnd 2. Sl st into next ch-1 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, *sk dc, sk ch sk dc, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp; rep from * 2 more times, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. 8 sts per side.
Rnd 3. Sl st into each of next 2 sts, *(sl st, ch 3, sl st) in corner/ch-2 sp, ch1, (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) between the next two shells, ch 1; rep from * 3 more times, join with sl st in first sl st of round. 15 sts per side.
Rnd 4. Sl st into ch-3 space, ch 4 (counts as tr), (2 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in same sp, ch 2, *(sl st, ch 3, sl st) in next corner/ch-2 sp, ch 2, (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in next ch-3 sp, ch 2; rep from * 2 more times, (sl st, ch 3, sl st) in last corner/ch-2 sp, ch 2, join with sl st in 4th ch of beginning ch-4. 17 sts per side.
Rnd 5. Sl st into each of next 2 sts, *(sl st, ch 3, sl st) in next ch-2/corner sp, ch 3, (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in next ch-3 sp, ch 3; rep from * 3 more times, join with sl st in first sl st of round. 19 sts per side.
Rnd 6. Sl st into next ch-3 sp, ch 2 (counts as hdc), (sc, hdc) in same sp, sk 1 ch, *3 dc in next ch, sk 1 ch and 1 tr, 3 dc shell in next tr, sk next tr, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner/ch-2 sp, sk next two tr, 3 dc into 3rd tr, sk 1 ch, 3 dc in next ch, sk 1 ch**, (hdc, sc, hdc) in ch-3 sp. Repeat from * 3 more times, ending last repeat at **, join with sl st in 2nd ch of beginning ch-2. 7 shells and ch-2 corner per side.

Rnd 7. Sl st in next 2 sts, sl st between shells, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in same place, 3 dc between every shell of prev rnd, except in corners. In corners, work (3 dc, ch2, 3 dc). Repeat around, join with sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch-3. 8 shells and ch-2 corner per side.
Rnd 8. Repeat Rnd 7. Fasten off. Weave in ends. 9 shells and ch-2 corner per side.
