I’m calling this design the “Veritable Fortress!” Worked from the center out like a granny square, it yields a dense fabric with no holes in the corners or anywhere else. Use it for baby blankets, throws, dishcloths, hot pads, pillow covers, and tote bags. It makes a nice, subtle background for an applique or an embroidered design. Try stitching multiple squares together in a long rectangle to make a warm scarf.
Linked stitches are identical to the Tunisian Simple Stitch, except they are worked vertically, in short, even rows or rounds, instead of horizontally in long rows.
Skill Level. Easy.
Techniques/Stitches. Slip stitch, chain, single crochet, stacked double crochet (aka stacked single crochet), linked double crochet, needle join (aka invisible join).
Tools for 8″ square: I-9 (5.5 mm) hook, scissors, yarn needle.
Tools for 12″ square: K 10.5 (6.5 mm) crochet hook, scissors, yarn needle.
New Technique! Using yarn tail from center of square and yarn needle, join horizontal bars of first and last stitch of each round. Do this after you complete each round or do them all at the end of the project.
Step-by-step instructions are included in the detailed photo tutorial which accompanies this pattern.
